Small Porch Problems

We live in a townhouse, so I'm very familiar with small space problems: not enough storage room, narrow hallways, low ceilings, and cramped spaces are just a few of my home decor struggles we have, and our front porch is no exception.

We have no room for a seating area and we certainly don't have a front yard, but that doesn't mean that we can't have curb appeal.  In fact, it means that decorating our outdoor space is even more important, because we don't have a lot to work with.

I haven't shown our outdoor entryway love since we moved in (seven years ago!), so I decided it was time for a bit of an outdoor refresh.

Wayfair 4th of July Clearance Finds

To perform this mini makeover, I'm using items from Wayfair's 4th of July Clearance. Area rugs, mirrors, bistro tables, deck items, outdoor lanterns, garden stools, home decor, coffee tables, fire pits, patio pavers, outdoor furniture, and more is up to 70% off with fast shipping, which means big savings. As you may know, decorating on a budget is kind of my "thing," so shopping sale items is one of my favorite ways to save money.

The sale runs from June 28 - July 7, 2024 and it’s live right now, so I decided to do the shopping work for you. In addition to my front patio finds, I've rounded up my top picks, bestsellers, and some of my most-loved Wayfair items.  They start at just $20; we’re modern organic bedside tables, an affordable narrow solid wood bench, a designer-inspired entryway table, a modern traditional patio set and so much more.

Front Porch Styling: A Modern Organic Doormat

One of the easiest ways to style your outdoor living space is by choosing a chic doormat or outdoor rug. Personally, I prefer doormats and like to stick to texture and prints (not words), so I chose a modern organic braided doormat to make the space more inviting.

This doormat is handmade, and at just $35, it looks like a designer mat that I fell in love with for $130, but is a fraction of the price.

Greenery: A Year-Round Wreath

Since we are so short on storage space, we don't have room to store seasonal ornamental wreaths. The solution? Choose a door wreath that welcomes you home year-round and doesn't feel too seasonal.  Wreaths give your front door warmth, character, and style, and if you live in a townhouse like us, helps people to find your unit.

Since I'm going for a transitional style, I chose this faux rosemary wreath that reminds me of a sunny European garden. It doesn't have any flowers on it, but you could absolutely choose something with flowers that don't lean towards a particular season.

If I want the wreath to be more seasonal, I can add bells around the winter holidays, orange and black ribbon around Halloween, and some faux flowers in the spring.

 Faux Planters and Plants

Since we don't have much landscaping around our home that is actually ours (and that we are in control of), I also added some faux plants and planters. So many of the front porch ideas I was looking at include real plants, and while I would love to have them, they just don't survive here in the all day direct sun. Trust me, I've tried everything.

I opted to use some faux rosemary and a faux terracotta style pot to get the breezy, classic look I was going for. To make it look even more real, I covered the base of the plant with real dirt, and it worked! My neighbor walked by the other day and commented on "such a pretty plant," and of course I told her my secret. I always find that plants and greenery create a cozy feeling, so having them at your front door is the perfect place for them.

Front Patio Ideas

I hope this mini patio makeover has shown you that there are many ways to make your front porch look good (even if you have limited space).

Outdoor living is a huge part of our life, and although we dream of having a pergola, a water feature, a bench, a porch swing, or even just a little side table, it's just not an option for us right now. These few small changes make a big impact in our little patio design, and I look forward to them welcoming me home every day.

Small Outdoor Space Decorating FAQs

1. How can I make the most of my small patio?

To maximize a small patio with small square footage, consider using multi-functional furniture pieces like a bench with storage, elevated planters, and versatile seating options such as bistro sets. Utilize vertical space by adding hanging planters or shelves, and incorporate throw pillows and outdoor rugs to add comfort and style.

2. What are some front porch ideas for small spaces?

For a small front porch or concrete patio, consider using space-saving furniture like a porch swing or a compact coffee table. Add flower beds a stylish house number, or planters to introduce greenery, and incorporate lanterns or small water features for a touch of ambiance. For a cohesive look, ensure everything outside matches your home's home decor style inside.

3. How can I improve the curb appeal of my small outdoor space?

To enhance the curb appeal of a small outdoor space, focus on creating a cohesive look by selecting a color scheme for flower pots, throw pillows, and other decorative elements. Consider incorporating outdoor lighting fixtures and adding pathway pavers, flagstone, or gravel to enhance the overall aesthetic. All of these details will come together to give your front porch a warm, inviting feel.

4. What seating area options work best for a small outdoor space?

In a small outdoor space, opt for compact seating areas such as a cozy sitting area with benches or side tables. Arrange furniture in a way that maximizes available space and consider incorporating outdoor rugs to define the seating area.
